Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical new film The Fabelmans explores his mother’s affair with his father’s best friend – a secret the 76-year-old Oscar winner has kept secret since he was 16.
“In a way, making this movie made me realize that I’d carried that burden all these years,” Spielberg said on this weekend’s CBS Sunday Morning show.
Although Spielberg brought the revelation to his mother’s attention, he never brought it to the attention of his late father. The couple separated a few years later.
“I had to drive it out of my own heart and soul,” Spielberg told the show. “Once that was out of my system, I could regret not sharing that with my dad.”
The film, which opens in limited theaters on November 11, centers on Sammy, a character based on Spielberg, who “discovers a harrowing family secret and explores how the power of movies can help him discover the truth.” such a summary on IMDb.
Michelle Williams and Paul Dano play characters inspired by Spielberg’s parents.
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, the film, which is being tipped for next year’s Oscars, has an approval rating of 94% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
