2 groups want to change New Jersey's child support law

TRENTON, NJ (CBSNewYork) – Two competing groups have put forward proposals to overhaul New Jersey's alimony law.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, Tom Leustek is leading one side of the effort.

“I’m a life support payer,” he said.

The group New Jersey Alimony Reform supports a bill that would limit payments to half the length of the marriage and end alimony at the payer's retirement age.

“We need more finality in New Jersey,” he said. “They’re just trying to say it’s one size fits all.”

John Finerty of the Alliance of Matrimonial Lawyers is supporting a competing bill that aims to make it easier to adjust maintenance payments when finances change or one party lives with a new partner.

“Our bill changes the law. Your bill simply contains an arbitrary designation for a specific period of time,” he said.

According to NorthJersey.com, judges can currently approve permanent alimony payments if one ex-spouse earns significantly more than the other.

Both sides have said change is needed.
