An Indonesian woman was flogged 100 times for adultery in the conservative province of Aceh, while her male partner, who denied the allegations, received just 15 lashes, AFP reported.
Ivan Najjar Alavi, the head of the General Investigations Branch at the East Aceh Prosecutor’s Office, said the court imposed a harsher sentence on the married woman after she confessed to investigators that she had sex outside of marriage.
Judges found it difficult to convict the man, who was then the head of the East Aceh fisheries department and was also married, because he denied any wrongdoing, Alavi added.
“During the trial he did not admit anything and denied all allegations. [judges] cannot prove if he is guilty,” Alavi told reporters after a public flogging of Sharia offenders in east Aceh.
Aceh is the only region in Muslim-majority Indonesia to have Islamic law that allows flogging for allegations of gambling, adultery, alcohol consumption and gay sex.
According to an AFP reporter at the scene, the woman’s flogging was briefly interrupted because she could not bear the pain.
Another man convicted of having sex with a minor was also flogged 100 times.
According to prosecutors, the man will serve 75 months in prison after the flogging.
