Ananya Panday doesn’t consider that Gehraiyaan glorifies infidelity

Bollywood star director Shakun Batra is ready to wow audiences with his upcoming star-studded project Gehraiyaan. Starring Deepika Padukone, Sidhant Chartruvedi, Ananya Panday and Dhairya Kawra, the film explores the perils of growing up.

The Amazon Prime Original sheds light on the topics of love, marriage and infidelity. However, in an interview with Hindustan Times, the starlet addressed audience backlash, with many opining on how the film glorifies infidelity.

Speaking of the same, the starlet commented, “We don’t condone or glorify infidelity; we simply observe how four people would behave in a given situation. But everyone will have different opinions on that and I look forward to the debates that will take place.” She added, “I’ve always been drawn to complex characters that help me grow as an actor, and hopefully, as one Person. I hope this paves the way for more complex, flawed, powerful and stronger female characters.”

Discussing her vision of the perfect relationship, the 23-year-old revealed: “Growing up I watched a lot of Shah Rukh Khan (actor) films and I wanted an ideal man that he would be madly in love with me and.” look at me with eyes of love After a while I realized that love has a lot to do with communication and friendship.”

In another interview with ETimes, the starlet commented on how Gehraiyaan helped her see life differently.

“It has helped me stop judging things, especially when it comes to relationships and things I’m not aware of. Relationships are always between two people and what happens often happens between them. Nobody knows what makes them happy and what all works,” noted Ananya. She continued, “Personally, I think infidelity is a deal-breaker for me at this point, but 10 years from now I don’t know if I’ll feel the same way. I haven’t lived and experienced enough for myself, but through the film I learned that you have to put yourself in other people’s shoes and empathize with what’s happening, where and when it’s happening and how things are developing from an internal perspective relationships complete.”

The actress, who made her debut in Karan Johar’s production Student of the Year 2, spoke at length about her role in Gehraiyaan.

“Most people don’t know me as a person. But those who know me know that I am very similar to Tia. So I didn’t have to look at the relationships around me to understand her psyche.” Shakun had figured that out before I knew it. Playing the role was cathartic in a sense that it can be scary,” she said, adding, “It’s not like I’m playing myself, but I had to borrow a lot of myself for the role. I can’t say I felt everything like and with the magnitude that Tia feels in the film, but I felt most of the things that she feels.”

The actor commented on how she had to reveal her own personality more deeply. “Maybe I felt her in smaller fractions and not in the way she goes through them and probably on a superficial level. So while playing her, I had to delve deeper and aptly imagine even more uncomfortable situations that portray Tia’s fragility, vulnerability, and insecurity. You put up barriers around yourself so people don’t see that side of you, and then you have to play on the screen for millions of people to see,” continued Ananya.

“The thought is scary, but once you get over it, it can be one of the most liberating feelings. Although my character in the film is going through something much greater than I experienced, I too have been heart broken, felt betrayed and hurt and even my perspective is as innocent as her where I like to see the best in people,” she concluded.

Gehraiyaan will be streaming on Amazon Prime on February 11th.
