In a rare recent ruling, a family court in the city has ordered a husband to pay Rs 1.50 lakh a month to his deserted wife and twins after seeing the man’s lavish lifestyle despite his wife and children lived a miserable life.
The woman lives with her parents and has school-age children. The lady had applied for monthly alimony of Rs 4,000 against the husband’s monthly income of Rs 8,000. The court granted alimony after examining the husband’s conduct in trying to prove reduced income after separating from his wife. He also attempted to evade taxes despite having transactions worth several hundred thousand rupees in his bank account.
The maintenance is Rs80000 per month for the wife while Rs35000 per month is payable for the two children as the wife has no source of income and is dependent on her parents.
As per the case details, the city resident married the Amritsar resident man in 2012 according to Hindu rites and rituals. The man and his family have several businesses and he earns Rs 8 lakh per month. The wife’s in-laws have five cars, half a dozen servants, several houses in posh neighborhoods and factories in the city, in addition to membership in prominent clubs for rich and famous people.
In a petition filed by attorney Sanjiv Thaker, she claimed the man sought a physical relationship with her right after their engagement and her in-laws called for an extravagant wedding at a five-star hotel, which has become the talk of the town could become. The woman’s parents caved in to the demand as they didn’t want the engagement to go awry. The woman’s father gave her a luxurious car and jewelry as a dowry, which was confiscated by her mother-in-law. The woman claimed to have been tortured by her in-laws after the marriage and said she was used as a sex object by the husband but continued to put up with it to save their marriage.
When she didn’t get pregnant after marriage, her in-laws accused her and forced her to undergo IVF treatment. After five years of marriage, she finally became pregnant, but due to the constant torture during her pregnancy, she gave birth to premature twins.
She also claimed that she once caught her husband molesting a mutual friend’s wife. Due to constant torture and abuse from her in-laws and husband during Covid, she returned to her parents’ home with her children.
For his part, the husband denied the allegations and said he was a part owner of the family business. Out of love and affection for her, he bought his wife a car and club membership. He said his wife was an MBA who could make a living. He claimed this was her plan to extort money from him to fund her lavish lifestyle and extravagant needs. However, the court granted the woman provisional maintenance.
