BHOPAL: Gwalior Police were surprised on Thursday when a local businessman with sacks full of coins worth Rs. 29,600 entered the police station and parked them in front of them.
Businessman Baldev Aggarwal, owner of Brijvasi Mishthan Bhandar in Gwalior, had a unique reason for his visit – to pay Rs 30,000 alimony to his wife. He handed over the remaining 400 rupees in cash to complete the alimony payment.
A family court had asked Baldev to pay maintenance to his wife. However, he had failed to comply with the court’s orders and had not paid any monthly child support payments for the past eight months. An arrest warrant was issued for him, prompting the police to take action and visit his home.
Desperate to avoid arrest, Baldev asked the police for some time to collect the necessary funds, but his request was met with reluctance. It was a Sunday and he didn’t have the cash on hand. In an imaginative move, he decided to offer the police two sacks of coins.
When the police officers saw the piles of coins, they were amazed as they faced the daunting task of counting the coins. To ensure the accuracy of their count, the police assigned two to three officers to work. The counting process took hours as they meticulously went through the coins and finally came up with a total of Rs.29,600.
This was only a partial payment of the total maintenance fee. Of the eight months owed, Baldev had only deposited six months with the police.
Nevertheless, he gave a written pledge and promised to deposit the remaining 10,000 rupees for the next two months in the coming days.
The incident drew a lot of attention on social media when a video of police counting coins at the train station went viral.
