Pune court orders husband to pay Rs 1.05 lakh for daughter's education while continuing to pay maintenance
Pune, August 20, 2024: First Class Magistrate Amrit Birajdar has ordered the husband of a Muslim woman to pay an additional amount of Rs 1.05 lakh towards their daughter's education expenses, even though the woman is already receiving interim maintenance. The order specifies that if the amount is not paid within fifteen days of the judgment, interest at the rate of 12% will be charged until it is repaid. This judgment provides relief to children who are facing academic setbacks following the separation of their parents.
Salim and Salma (names changed) got married during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before their wedding, Salma worked in a private hospital, but Salim insisted that she quit her job. After she became pregnant, Salim asked her to avoid Hindu doctors and seek advice from a Maulana instead. Salma endured mental harassment and was repeatedly pressured to have a boy. During her pregnancy, she was beaten and thrown out of the house.
Salma filed a domestic violence case through lawyer Neeta Bhavar. While the case was pending, Salma gave birth to a daughter and was granted interim maintenance. When her daughter started school, Salma applied for financial assistance for education expenses through her lawyer. The court has now ordered her husband to pay Rs 1.05 lakh for her daughter's education.
