A man was repeatedly stabbed to death outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Michigan during a custody swap, according to local news reports.

As reported by WXMI, the Portage Public Safety Department was called to the parking lot around 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 3.

According to MichiganLive, officers learned that two men — the suspect and his sister’s ex-boyfriend — got into an argument during the custody swap.

The suspect, a 19-year-old Portage man, then stabbed the ex-boyfriend multiple times in the back, MichiganLive reported.

According to WXMI, the injured man, a 24-year-old from Kalamazoo, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, authorities said.

Other people who had gone on exchanges with both men also began fighting, WKZO reported. Several were injured but refused treatment.

The 19-year-old man was arrested, WKZO reported, and investigations are ongoing.

McClatchy News contacted the Portage Department of Public Safety on July 4 for updated information and is awaiting a response.

Portage is about 60 miles south of Grand Rapids.
