An Edinburgh man is in custody after police say he tried to hire two people to murder a woman over a custody dispute, documents show.
According to jail records, Jonathan Gutierrez was booked into the Hidalgo County Jail on Friday, Nov. 17, on a charge of criminal conspiracy to commit murder.
According to an affidavit obtained by Channel 5 News, the FBI began investigating Gutierrez last week after he met with two people in a public parking lot to plan the murder of a woman.
The meeting was recorded, the affidavit states.
During the meeting, Gutierrez said the dispute with the potential victim was over a custody matter. According to the affidavit, Gutierrez provided both people with a photo of the woman and a $1,000 deposit. Gutierrez also said he would provide people with the woman’s address at a later date.
The FBI and the Edinburg Police Department then conducted surveillance on Gutierrez, who met with one of the individuals on Thursday, November 16, and said that the victim’s murder was pending the outcome of an upcoming decision in the custody case.
Gutierrez was arrested during a traffic stop after that meeting, the affidavit states.
Records show Gutierrez remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.
