Brothers shot while exchanging custody

OAKLAND – Police here have identified two brothers who were killed after an unknown gunman allegedly kicked in their door and shot them both in the back.

Nathanuel Wills, 48, and his younger brother Jason Wills, 46, were shot to death Dec. 20 in an apartment in the 300 block of Fairmount Avenue in Oakland. According to police, the double murder occurred during a planned child exchange with other people in the area and may have been related to a verbal altercation that occurred shortly before the shots were fired.

The shooting occurred just minutes after 11 p.m. on Dec. 20, authorities said.

The Wills brothers lived in the area and may have had previous contact with one of the children involved in the custody exchange, according to authorities. Police said they recovered several bullet casings and drug paraphernalia from the apartment, but no weapons.

No arrests have been announced and no charges have been filed, according to court records. The brothers were pronounced dead inside the apartment and the suspect left the home before police arrived, authorities said.
