County officials investigate custody dispute

Below are excerpts from reports from the Texas County Sheriff's Department:

•On July 18, at approximately 5:40 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to a report of a possible custody obstruction at a residence on Date Drive in Summersville.

A 31-year-old man who lives there told the officer his 5-year-old son was taken without permission by a 67-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman who claimed to be the boy's grandparents. The father told the officer they forcibly ripped the boy from his arms and took him to a location in Shannon County.

The officer contacted the man and woman and advised them to return the child. After further investigation, the officer was informed by Shannon County authorities that the boy would stay with the grandparents until the man from whom they had taken the child proved that he was the father.

Child support records were faxed to Shannon County, but authorities there claimed this was insufficient evidence. The investigation into the matter is ongoing and a report has been sent to the District Attorney.

•On July 5, at approximately 7:45 a.m., an officer was dispatched to a report of property damage at the Boiling Springs Resort on Highway BB west of Licking.

Upon arrival, the officer made contact with a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper and the owner of the resort and found that a man had been very drunk the night before and had been driving up and down the road telling people he was going to beat them up. A witness allegedly told the officer that the suspect had hit two other men and that they had knocked him down twice because he kept coming at them.

Chase D. Mings, 25, of Ash Grove, received citations for disturbing the peace by affray and second-degree criminal damage to property for causing ruts and other damage with his vehicle in the resort's campground. After the citations, a woman took Mings to Texas County Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for wounds he sustained when the two men he attacked repeatedly struck him in revenge.

• A 37-year-old Houston man reported on July 11 that his soon-to-be ex-wife had wrecked one of his cars without his permission.

An investigating officer made contact with the 34-year-old woman, who stated that the car (a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier) was parked in front of her home in a trailer park on Morton Road and was missing when she returned home from work.

The investigation into this case is ongoing.

• A 66-year-old Licking man came to the TCSD office on July 10 to report that a 16-gauge shotgun and a box of bullets had been stolen from his home on Cadle Road.

The man named a 24-year-old man from Licking as a suspect, whom he had hired to cut down logs on his property.

•Zachary D. Sims, 24, of 20750 Mounty Drive in Licking, received citations for theft under $500 and first-degree trespassing after allegedly stealing a two-prong hay cart from the home of a 59-year-old man on Highway 32 on July 10. An officer investigating another case went to Sims' home and observed the equipment.

•On July 13, an officer was dispatched at approximately 2:15 p.m. after the manager of the Corner Express gas station in Licking reported that someone had struck the ATM. The manager gave the officer the license plate information of a white minivan with two suspects inside and requested that the two occupants of the vehicle be placed under a restraining order. Licking Police were notified.

•A woman called on July 9 to report that her son had left her brush cutter at an ex-girlfriend's house in a trailer park on Highway E. An investigator went to the house and retrieved the brush cutter. The woman went to the TCSD office and picked it up.

• Nicholas Jones, 23, of 18100 Highway B in Houston, was issued a summons for third-degree domestic violence after allegedly assaulting a 47-year-old woman during an altercation at his residence on July 10 at approximately 10:50 p.m.

•On July 13, a man called around 7:10 p.m. to report that he was walking on Highway U and someone was following him. An investigating officer was unable to locate the man.
