Frese recognizes that divorce and custody disputes often leave people with multiple emotional and financial burdens, a fact reflected in numerous studies. The immense toll of litigation within families has been particularly severe over the past three years as statistics show a rise in breakups during and after the pandemic.

While many people’s first instinct may be to take their ex-spouse to court, that approach can be costly and isn’t pragmatic when children are involved, Frese says. Believing that mediation is a necessary step in divorce and custody disputes, Frese can develop visiting plans for her clients and help them reach a fair settlement with their ex-spouse outside of the courtroom, thereby minimizing their attorney fees and hearing time become .

However, Frese acknowledges that such disputes often require litigation. If, despite all mediation efforts, no agreement can be reached, she represents her client in court and fights for the claims to which he is entitled.

Frese graduated from Chicago-Kent College of Law with a law degree in 2005 and spent the next seven years as a prosecutor, working on cases ranging from misdemeanor to first-degree murder. In 2014, she returned to her hometown of Marshalltown and joined Kaplan and Frese, where she worked as a federal defender. With nearly two decades of legal experience in family, criminal and federal law, she now runs her own practice as a sole attorney, allowing her to pay particular attention to the individual circumstances of each of her clients.

“My practice style is client-oriented. I realize there are a variety of reasons why someone would seek help from a family or criminal defense attorney,” says Frese. “I always offer initial consultations so clients can discuss their needs with me to see if my services are right for them.”
