Newly released video from the Los Angeles Police Department shows an attempted murder and a police chase that ends in a crash – all related to a custody dispute.
According to an LAPD press release, the incident occurred on Oct. 1 when Harbor Division officers responded to calls about a custody dispute in the parking lot of a Target store at Gaffey Street and Capitol Drive in San Pedro.
In the video, the suspect, 39-year-old Miesha Scott, discusses with officers why she refuses to return her 5-year-old son to his foster parents after a visit.
“It’s hard for me to be a kid here with my cousin,” Scott says in the video.
The 39-year-old told officers she was distressed and when they questioned her about her son’s legal guardian, she became agitated. Police then call the Department of Children and Family Services, who confirm that Scott does not have custody, all while their 5-year-old sits in the back of a U-Haul pickup.

A short time later, the officers managed to get the child out of the pickup and peacefully handed him over to his foster parents, one of whom is Scott’s cousin.
The problem appears to have been solved, but as the 39-year-old woman drives off, she turns the truck around and plows into the foster mother, narrowly missing one of the officers.
In the video, another officer can be seen running toward the U-Haul and firing his weapon in an attempt to stop him. Scott continues, leading the authorities’ pursuit until she eventually crashes into a tree at Pacific Avenue and Paseo Del Mar.
Scott was taken to the hospital where she was treated for her injuries and taken into custody. She faces two charges: attempted murder, assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and felony evasion.

The foster mother was treated for her injuries and is expected to recover.
Authorities said no officers or other community members were injured in the incident. The LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division and Forensic Science Division are investigating the officer-involved shooting.
The entire investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Police Commissioner’s Office and the Office of the Inspector General to determine whether the use of force was justified and consistent with department policy.
