Custody dispute leads to stabbing, suspect in custody | Public Safety

A domestic dispute escalated into violence Friday evening, resulting in a knife attack at a home on Georgia Avenue in Winder.

The incident began after a custody dispute escalated when Stephen Jelacic, 36, of Winder, locked himself and his daughter in a room and refused to open the door.

Family members told police that Jelacic was often violent when he was drunk, so they tried to intervene, which led to the altercation.

When officers arrived on scene, they found Jelacic sitting in a blue Ford F-150 with the door open and his leg hanging out. He was arrested quickly and without incident.

In the back bedroom of the home, officers discovered the victim suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen.

Medical personnel treated the man at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital for further care. His condition was not disclosed.

Jelacic was arrested after he admitted to officers that he had stabbed the man. He is charged with family violence, including aggravated assault, aggravated assault and battery.
