Away from the fame, glitz and glamour of the screen, many celebrities face deep personal conflicts, including disputes over the custody of their children.
Known for their talent and charisma, these celebrities have also shared their heartbreaking side of the legal battles and emotional turmoil in the custody battle.
Despite the wealth and hectic pace of their lives, some of them go to bed at night with a heavy heart, knowing that their parental rights are being contested.
R takes a closer look at some Nigerian celebrities who have bravely spoken about their experiences with custody battles.
Nigerian singer Davido recently made headlines for his ongoing custody battle with the mother of his first child, Sophia Momodu. He is fighting for joint custody of his daughter Imade and insists that he has fulfilled his fatherly duties over the years.
Sophia claimed that the singer had failed to meet his financial obligations to his daughter, leaving her to cover rent, living and travel expenses, healthcare and all other related expenses.
Following their court date on July 5, 2024, Davido addressed the custody battle in an emotional series of posts on Instagram, telling Sophia that she could keep Imade, but the case was still before court.
Likewise, Big Brother Naija star Queen Mercy Atang is embroiled in a custody battle with the father of her child, Lord Lamba. A petition dated February 16, 2024, began circulating online in early March.
The application was addressed to the Lagos State Family Court in Ikeja. In it, Lord Lamba sought sole custody of their daughter on the grounds that he had been denied access to Keilah despite regularly paying child support.
However, on May 23, 2024, a Magistrate Court in Lagos adjourned the custody proceedings between Queen Mercy and Lord Lamba to July 18, 2024, as Lord Lamba failed to appear in court on that day.
Nigerian comedian Buchi also spoke openly about his custody battle with his former in-laws in November 2023. In a series of Instagram posts, he repeatedly accused his ex-wife, Rukky's parents, of allegedly denying him access to his children who were in their care in the United States of America.
He added that he could only speak to his children when his estranged in-laws made the calls. Buchi also claimed that he was blocked after each call to prevent him from calling back.
He claimed they had asked him to pay $300,000 a month in child support. He said he paid that money, but in return he still hadn't received access to his children. The following month he happily announced that he had been granted access to his children.
Popular media star Oladotun Kayode, affectionately known as Do2dtun, is also embroiled in a messy custody battle. In October 2023, he claimed that his ex-wife Taiwo denied him access to their daughters despite them having agreed on joint custody.
He stressed that he would defend himself against her and her brother Dbanj. On his Instagram page, he attacked the singer again, claiming that he helped Taiwo keep her children from him. In response, Taiwo posted on her Instagram account that the pensioner lied, knew where his children were and had access to them.
