The deputy contacted Jeffrie Ray Glover Jr., the sheriff’s office said.
According to deputies, Glover had refused to leave the school and assaulted the deputy during their encounter.
The sheriff’s office said the attack put the deputy in a “deadly violent scenario” that left Glover dead.
That Grand Forks Herald reported Glover got into a fight with his ex-wife’s boyfriend over custody issues at school.
Glover’s youngest son witnessed the shooting, reports the Herald.
The shooting is now under investigation by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
The deputy concerned, who has not been identified, is on administrative leave.
