Elyria man killed after custody swap – Morning Journal

The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Jan. 30 death of a 24-year-old Elyria man, which allegedly occurred after a custody transfer.

Killed in the incident was Christopher D. Sayers Jr.

Deputies responded at 8:35 p.m. on Jan. 30 at a home on Whitehead Road in LaGrange Township to investigate a reported shooting. On the way to the home, the deputies learned that Sayers had had an argument with another man.

Sayers had completed the custody swap with his former girlfriend prior to the shooting, according to a department press release.

After lawmakers and members of the LaGrange Township Fire Department arrived at the scene, medical personnel rendered Sayers assistance, but he died at the scene, according to the press release.

A child was involved in the alleged custody swap, but the child did not witness the shooting, according to Lorain County Sheriff Capt. Richard A. Bosley.

Two guns were secured at the scene, Bosley said.

No charges have been filed and the case remains under investigation.

“It should be noted that this was not a random incident. All the people involved were known to each other,” the press release said.
