About the editor:
The First Wives Advocacy Group is asking Gov. DeSantis to veto a bill that would change the way Florida judges rule child custody and child support cases.
The grassroots mothers group, which advocates for divorced mothers in Florida, warns that SB 1796 would harm children by undermining mothers’ rights to protect them. They fear that the previously rejected law would expose abused spouses and their children to further abuse and danger.
Among other measures, the bill would place a greater burden of proof of danger on parents who apply for greater than 50/50 custody.
According to a conservative estimate by experts, more than 58,000 children are brought into unsupervised contact with physically or sexually abusive parents after a divorce each year in the United States. This is more than double the number of new cases of childhood cancer each year.
Disguised as a civil rights initiative, this bill is another insidious attack to destroy the American family within our own Florida legislature. It is also clearly contrary to the stated principles of the Republican Party platform. It is not consistent with Governor DeSantis’ agenda to protect Florida’s children and families.”
Today, as mothers from across the state of Florida, we are appealing for Governor DeSantis to veto SB 1796.
