Lawyers say the government’s move to freeze alimony accounts could have negative repercussions, as some couples separating on bad terms could lead to one ex-spouse wanting to “punish” the other. – Pixabay image April 2, 2022.

LAWYERS warn of caution over the government’s plan to freeze the bank accounts of alimony defaulters, saying it is not the best solution and a blanket move without considering the financial capabilities of some ex-husbands.

Lawyer Ng Geok Chee said the plan, announced by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob at Umno’s general assembly last month, could help some ex-wives as non-payment of alimony is a problem for many.
