Husband shoots wife's friend during custody exchange

According to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office, an estranged husband shot his wife's new boyfriend in the stomach Saturday night.

The shooting occurred around 5:30 p.m. Saturday near the Kitsap County Fairgrounds when the suspect's 31-year-old wife met him to drop off their 8-year-old child after a visit. The woman first dropped off her 21-year-old boyfriend at the fairgrounds, then took her son to his father. When she returned to pick up her boyfriend, her husband, 40, drove past and shot the couple.

According to the sheriff's office, the husband drove up and began shooting with their son in the car. The woman and boyfriend tried to drive away, but officers said he allegedly drove behind them and rammed their car head-on as they made a U-turn.

As they got out of the car, the two men began yelling at each other before the husband produced a silenced .22-caliber handgun and shot the friend in the stomach.

“A Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene and found the victim holding the suspect in a headlock in the ditch,” the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post about the situation.

The woman and child were not injured in the shooting. The boyfriend was taken to Harborview Medical Center and the husband was transported to St. Michael's Medical Center for a blow to the head before being transferred to the Kitsap County Jail.

“They are shaken, but they are safe. She is a wonderful mother. She takes care of her son. That's how we know them,” Krystina Cavanagh, the child's teacher, told KIRO 7. “This is hard for them and I just ask that we just show compassion for them.” They are human beings. They are human beings.”
