I’m a celeb star in Richard Madeley’s tragic story from baby abuse to infidelity

Richard Madeley had to leave I’m a Celebrity final season after being hospitalized.

On Instagram, he wrote a sweet message to his 35,3,000 followers, in which he revealed that he had to leave the show because he broke the Covid bubble.

He said, “Hello everyone! Richard here – just to say I’m absolutely fine at first. I felt uncomfortable for a moment in the early hours of the morning and was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

“By leaving the camp I had consistently broken the Covid bubble and therefore had to leave the castle and all the wonderful celebs who stay in the camp.”

The 65-year-old was disappointed to have to leave the show so early.

Richard had to stop I’m A Celeb

He continued: “Of course I am discouraged from leaving so soon, but the safety of all campmates is a top priority. I’m incredibly excited to continue their journey … even more so given the prospect of being in a slightly warmer place “than Gwrych Castle.”

He thanked his fans for their support during his brief appearance on the show and wrote: “Thanks to everyone who supported me on my short but absolutely unforgettable adventure – I made great friends and honestly had the time of my life . “

The humble star has seen a lot of tragedies throughout his life, from being “badly beaten” as a child by his father to some tragic losses.

Here’s a closer look at what he’s been through …

Abandoning the child

Richard suggested in his book Father and Sons that the problems that built up in his life began with his grandfather being abandoned as a child.

At the age of only 10, Geoffrey Madeley found himself without his family.

Geoffrey moved to Liverpool from Worcester with his parents and six brothers and sisters when the unfortunate reality took a turn that Richard claims it could have come “straight from Dickens’ pages”.

The family stopped at his uncle’s kiln farm in the middle of the voyage, and Geoffrey fell asleep excitedly, only to board a ship for Merseyside soon.

But when the little boy woke up, he found the house completely empty.

It was no mistake that the boy was left alone, Richard explained in his book: “My grandfather was not forgotten. A deal was made. He was left behind.”

Geoffrey was left as a “security deposit” in 1907 to secure the passage to Canada for his own father.

Richard wrote: “When I was a teenager, on one of my long walks with the old man, I asked, ‘Didn’t you even get a chance to say goodbye, Grandpa?’

“With complete serenity he replied, ‘No. No, I haven’t.'”

He continued, “He was not treated like a slave, or like a servant. He was a family, after all. But he had become something dangerously close to one thing in motion: a person who was bought and paid for.”

It is this abandonment that led Richard’s theories to lead Geoffrey to beat Richard’s father, Christopher, which he believes has caused a circle of abuse.

Violent blows

Richard suffered strokes that marked him as a child for six months that he was open to at GMB about.

On the show, he said, “I was badly beaten by my father as a child. Looking back on my childhood, most of my friends and I have received the stick multiple times.

“And I was badly beaten. I was hit three times for throwing a paper arrow. The scars lasted six months and I’m still angry about it.”

The TV host continued, “I swore I’d never put a finger on my kids and I didn’t think I did, but I asked them and they both have faint memories of me turning them on or off hit the butt twice and must have hidden it. “

Richard has two children – Jack and Chloe – with his wife Judy Finnigan and is also the stepfather of Judy’s twins from their first marriage.

Speaking to The Guardian when his book was published, Richard said he understood why his father hit him.

He said: “He thought it was acceptable – and that was then. The beating was a learned behavior, he learned the practice from his father and from society.

“When my father hit me, it was out of control – two years of uncontrolled beating – and now I realize it was because he was dealing with a lot of buried anger.”

Father’s last words

Christopher was just 49 years old when he died, he suffered from a coronary thrombosis, he had spent his last day alive before rushing home.

The tragic death led Richard to quit smoking because he did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Richard wrote: “Dad did what many men are strangely forced to do when their heart signals an impending spasm – he went home.

“My father managed to get to the front door, fumbled desperately with the key, stumbled in and collapsed in the arms of my terrified mother. He had three minutes to live.”

His father’s last words were “disappointingly banal”.

Richard confessed: “Not a final pearl of wisdom; not a blanket but concise summary of forty-nine years of existence. ‘Do you have to lean on me so damned?” he gasped before his life died out with the sudden totality of a power failure. “

Shoplifting

The journalist confessed that he was “overly confident” in his youth, which led to his being caught shoplifting in 1994.

In 2008 he told The Guardian about the incident. He said it originally happened accidentally when he forgot to put champagne in the till next to his grocery store.

He said, “I just didn’t concentrate. I put the food through the till, I forgot to take out the champagne.

“It was, I can handle anything, I can juggle eight balls in the air, and actually I’m a terrible cropper. I can joke about it now.”

Despite being acquitted of the charges in court, he said the “publicity was humiliating”.

Comparing shoplifting to public masturbation, he said, “If I had been accused of robbing a bank, it had at least a bit of glamor, but fucking shoplifting … a public toilet. Just awful.”

Lots of matters

After his father’s death, Richard confessed that he had “about 10” affairs during his marriage to Lynda Hooley.

He did not shrink from the truth in Piers Morgan’s life stories in 2009, saying, “We just lived together for a while and then got married – I pushed for it – and then my father died.

“It would have been a very bad start in any marriage and we both quickly realized that we weren’t a good match and things were starting to fall apart.”

Piers asked the journalist if he had ever cheated on his first wife and he was quick to admit that he had.

Richard said, “Oh, many, many, probably in about five years, about 10.

“I had to cover up some of the reasons for this. I was very lonely and I think I clung to Lynda.

“Although the marriage had some very happy moments, there was a lot of negative in it. I don’t use that as an excuse. It’s wrong to have affairs, but I was a very young man.”

Tragic loss

Before Jack and Chloe were born, Richard and Judy were expecting a baby and miscarried.

Richard opened up during Baby Loss Awareness Week in 2018 and told The Telegraph, “Judy was 16 weeks pregnant when she went for a routine check-up.”

The couple married in 1986 and were expecting their first child together.

Richard said he would never forget the sister who stormed towards him on that tearful day.

He said: “But I will never forget the nurse who rushes towards me, a pained expression on her face: ‘Mr Madeley, you have to come here …’

“I came to Judy in the exam room. Tears ran down her face: ‘It died, Richard. It died.’

“The scan found a perfect fetus with a non-existent heartbeat.”

His wife then went into labor that Richard said broke his heart as she completed the “empty, cold, defeated, and drab” process of giving birth to the fetus.
