Bengaluru: A Karnataka High Court judge's remarks on a maintenance petition have sparked widespread debate on social media. The judge questioned the petitioner's demand for a monthly maintenance amount of Rs 616,300, calling it excessive and unreasonable.

During the hearing, the judge expressed disbelief at the amount demanded, asking, “Does anyone spend that much? A single woman on herself?” The judge added, “If she wants to spend, let her earn it. Not on the husband,” and advised the woman's lawyer to explain that such demands were unreasonable.

The judge emphasized that the plaintiff had no other family obligations and stated that maintenance should not serve as a punishment for the husband.

The judge's stance was widely praised online, with the video of the exchange being viewed over 2 million times. Social media users praised the judge's approach, with one person commenting, “Once again, women judges show how it's done with the right questions and correct verdicts!” Another user said the judge has the makings of the future Chief Justice of India.

Author Isha Singla also commented on the matter and questioned the legitimacy of such a high maintenance demand, especially when it included questionable expenses such as a gold loan.
