Kehlani files for restraining order against ex and accuses him of abuse in custody battle

Kehlani is taking action against her ex Javaughn Young-White in a custody battle over their daughter.

On Friday, August 9, the “After Hours” singer, who uses the pronouns “she/her” and “them/thems,” filed for a temporary restraining order against her ex in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Young-White, 27, is now prohibited from contacting Kehlani and her five-year-old daughter Adeya Nomi directly or indirectly, including by phone or email, and must stay at least 100 metres away from them, their home, workplace and daycare at all times.

While the restraining order is in effect, Kehlani, 29, who dated Young-White from 2018 to 2019, retains full residency and custody of Adeya.

In the documents, a judge also noted that “there is a risk that [Young-White] could take the children without permission” because he had “been abusive” and “uncooperative” towards Kehlani in the past.

Under the terms of the restraining order, Young-White is also prohibited from traveling outside of California with Adeya, is prohibited from applying for a passport or other travel-related documents, and is prohibited from possessing or purchasing firearms or ammunition.

A hearing on the motion for a temporary restraining order will take place on September 3.

The day before, Kehlani had filed another document accusing Young-White of domestic violence. In the document, Kehlani accused him of “inflicting emotional harm, disturbing my peace, and fearing for my safety and the safety of our daughter.”

“He created a media frenzy that has resulted in many people now harassing me online,” she wrote about an alleged incident in August, according to the filing. “This is also terrible for our young daughter, who is not a public figure and should not be featured on websites and other media. I have had to hire private security for our home to protect us.”

According to the filing, in another incident in early June, Kehlani claims he became so angry when she told him to “get out of my house and not come back” that he “knocked down the locked bedroom door.” At the time, he allegedly called her a “bitch” and a “liar” and blamed Kehlani for the birth of their daughter, saying they had “ruined” his “life.”

She also claims he “took psychedelic mushrooms and smoked weed all day long in front of our daughter” while living in a back house on their property for co-parenting purposes. When Adeya visited him, she would come back “stinking of marijuana.”

“His mood was dark. He was acting out and I no longer felt safe at home,” they claimed in the filing. “In the past, when he was like this, he would often go on religious rants and I believe he was so high that he would go into a semi-psychotic state.”

According to the filing, she also claims that an argument broke out between them when she was seven months pregnant and he became so angry that he “threw a guitar at me.”

In the filing, Kehlani again requested that Young-White not have any contact with her and stay more than 300 feet away from her at all times. They also requested that he not have visitation rights.

Young-White did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

A few days before the latest filing, Young-White filed for sole custody of Adeya.

“Adeya was born through a home birth orchestrated by a cult that I would describe as belonging to,” Young-White wrote in the documents. “Because Adeya was born at home and not in a conventional setting such as a hospital, my name is not on Adeya's birth certificate.”

He also claimed that the group controls her actions and behavior, “including when it comes to raising our daughter.” Young-White is asking the court to establish his paternity so he can exercise all of his rights as a father. He is also demanding child support from Kehlani.

On August 7, Kehlani posted a statement on her Instagram stories responding to allegations that she had put her daughter in danger.

“I strongly deny all allegations that I put my child in danger or left him alone with someone deemed dangerous or unsafe,” Kehlani wrote. “I also do not agree with any of the allegations made in the media against my former religious community.”

“I have always been very careful to ensure that my child is protected and safe at all times,” they continued. “My child and my commitment as a mother have always been and always will be my only driving forces in this life. That is who I am and what I have always focused on.”
