A man fired a gun Monday morning during a custody hearing at a law firm in the Summerlin area near Las Vegas, killing two people, Las Vegas police said.
The shooter is also dead and police believe he took his own life, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said during a news conference. According to authorities, the two victims were a woman in her 30s and a man in his 50s.
The shooting happened around 10 a.m. in a suite on the fifth floor of a building, police Lt. Jason Johansson said in a news conference later Monday.
Seven people were at the law firm participating in a deposition in a custody case, Johansson said – three people representing each party and a court reporter, he said.
A few minutes after the statement, a man in his 70s stood up and began shooting at two people across from him, Johansson said.
The rest of the group fled, called police and were questioned by investigators, Johansson said.
“It seems that our two victims were the very specific targets,” Johansson told reporters. He did not share details about how the victims and the shooter knew each other or what connection they may have had.
Police also did not provide any information about a possible motive for the shooting. All children involved will be held accountable and are safe, Johansson said.
Officers also searched the shooter's vehicle and served a search warrant at his home, Johansson said.
