Lawyers: Colorado suspect Kimberlee Singler was involved in a custody battle before murdering children

New information has been released about the arrest of a Colorado Springs, United Kingdom mother after her two children died.

Attorneys for Kevin Wentz, the children's father, say he and his ex-wife Kimberlee Singler have been in a contentious divorce and custody battle since December 2018, with hearings held in both Larimer County and El Paso County. In a press release, the lawyers also explained what is said to have happened in the weeks and months before the children were killed.

According to Wentz's attorneys, Singler filed a petition for a temporary protective order in El Paso County in September 2023, alleging that her ex-husband Wentz brandished a knife at her. Wentz denied the allegations and the case is still open.

Then, in November 2023, Larimer District Court heard a hearing on Singler's emergency motion to restrict parenting time over the same knife allegations. The court found that Wentz did not pose an imminent threat and reversed the order.

In November, the court also ordered the children to spend more time with their father around Thanksgiving and again from December 16 to 31. The exchange of children would take place at a Colorado Springs police station and the Greeley police station. The court ordered that Singler pay Wentz's attorneys' fees and that Wentz be granted additional time with the children he lost as a result of Singler's allegations.

Court hearings were also scheduled for January on a contempt petition against Singler for failing to follow the parenting time instructions and changing the parenting time.

In November, the court also ordered Singler to take the children to the Colorado Springs police station on December 16. Fast forward to December 16th and Singler never showed up with the kids. Wentz and his attorney attempted to contact Singler, but she did not respond. Wentz's attorney filed an emergency motion for law enforcement assistance to enforce parental leave. On December 18, the court granted the motion and a status conference was scheduled for December 20.

On December 18, Singler allegedly killed seven-year-old Aden and nine-year-old Elianna “Ellie.” It is also alleged that Singler did not contact police until the early hours of December 19th.

Colorado Springs police said they were called to a burglary case on Dec. 19 and found the two children dead. Their mother, Singler, and the children's 11-year-old sister were also injured.

Singler is charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder and ultimately sent back to Colorado Springs for arraignment.

In a press release, Wentz's attorneys say Wentz was devastated to learn of his children's deaths. His lawyer said he hoped for justice for his children Aden and Ellie. He also prays for his surviving daughter as she continues to heal.

A private funeral for Aden and Ellie is expected to take place later this week.

Singler's next court date is scheduled for the end of the month.
