The pastry chef tried to pass the murder off as an accident; called his wife’s brother claiming she fell off the terrace washing clothes. She was taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where doctors pronounced her dead
A 27-year-old pastry chef was arrested on Sunday in Anand Nagar, Haibowal, for allegedly murdering his wife on suspicion of infidelity.
The defendant Vikrant Kumar alias Vicky allegedly hit the victim Simran alias Manisha, 27, with a baseball bat and then strangled him with a handkerchief on Saturday.
After the crime was committed, he tried to pass it off as an accident and called his brother-in-law, claiming that Simran fell off the terrace while doing laundry.
The victim’s brother, Karan Singh aka Sunny, said when he reached her house he found Simran lying unconscious on a bed. They took her to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where doctors pronounced her dead.
Another Deputy Police Commissioner (ADCP, City 3) Ashwani Gotyal said the defendant had escaped from the hospital. On January 8, a murder against the accused was recorded at the Haibowal Police Station.
In his testimony to the police, the victim’s brother also said that the accused had previously beaten up Simran while he was drunk. Besides, Vikrant didn’t have a steady income, and Simran was eager to get a job, but the former was against it.
The ADCP said the defendant confessed to the crime and said he murdered Simran because she was having an extramarital affair.
Simran married Vikrant in 2013. The couple have a seven year old daughter and a five year old son. At the time of the crime, the children were in their maternal grandparents’ house.
