The fight over alimony reform will resume during the 2020 legislative session, with both sides set to take major steps to prepare for the next round of the fight.
There is no secret to Florida politics criticized maintenance reformers in the past for snarky and insensitive comments on social media.
Regardless of where you stand on lifetime support (and we certainly have strong opinions on the matter), the battle next session could be the toughest yet.
This is because the leading alimony reformers have tightened their measures and taken them to a new level. A battle that used to be fought by the Florida Family Law Reform PAC is now led by the new one Family Justice in Florida Group.
Tampa lawyer Marc Johnson is a leadership member of the new group, which claims poor behavior by some former members has given alimony reform a bad name among some lawmakers.
Florida Family Fairness baits the troublemakers and starts again.
“Insults, personal attacks and questionable behavior are unacceptable. We will continue to focus on the issue and help educate legislators, Mr. Governor [Ron] DeSantis and the public,” Johnson said. “Divorce doesn’t have to destroy a family. Florida’s current child support laws are hurting families.”
To help them, Florida Family Fairness has significantly expanded its staff. You have hired Ballard Partners and public affairs shop McNicholas & Associates with offices in Palm Beach, Tallahassee and Charleston, SC.
This has rubbed some keyboard reform advocates the wrong way, but we say goodbye to the nasty and brash social media sites run by people like us Debbie Leff Kelapire And Elvina Bergmann Kallett. Pages I need to remind you compared alimony to slaverycalled Rep. Bob Rommel a “one-man dictatorship” and referred to women as “leeches.”
Even Terry Power is on his best behavior. He returned to Florida from Texas and is no longer a refugee. We hear he's settling his case with his ex-wife.
Time to make the donuts!
Not to be outdone or outdone, the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar reserves the right to do so Smith, Bryan & Myers. The East Park team will certainly have history on their side, as alimony reform has been on fire over the past six years, largely due in part to the work of Nelson Diaz And Southern Strategy Group. At this end of last session, Diaz apparently made the decision to separate from the Family Law Department.
This one is almost as good as NBA free agency. I would start popping my popcorn now. It's sure to be a wild ride in 2020.
