A 45-year-old man is believed to have shot dead his estranged wife and injured his mother-in-law on Tuesday after opening fire on her near a courthouse in the Shirur area of Pune district of Maharashtra on Tuesday, police said.
The shooting took place around 12 noon at the compound of the Public Works Department, which is near the Civil Court, Pune Police Superintendent Abhinav Deshmukh said.
Defendant Dipak Dhawale, a retired army man, and his brother traveled from Ambernath to Shirur in an auto rickshaw to hear the alimony dispute with his estranged wife Manjura in court, he said.
Dhawale allegedly opened fire on Manjura and his mother-in-law Tulsabai Zambare, he said.
The Dhawale brothers fled after the shooting in the auto rickshaw but were arrested by police near Ranjangaon district, the official said.
Manjura succumbed to her injuries, while Tulsabai suffered serious injuries and is being treated at a hospital, he said, adding that police recovered the licensed weapon used in the crime.
