Miranda Lambert announces the album “Postcards From Texas” and releases the new song “Alimony”

The new album is set to be released on September 13th and will feature 14 tracks paying tribute to their home state.

Miranda Lambert has announced that her next album, Postcards from Texas, will be released on September 13. All week, the three-time GRAMMY winner has been hinting at her exciting news on postcards and billboards hung around town. We now know that with this news, she is expressing her excitement to complete the travel stories of her last album, Palomino, and return to her home state for her first project on her new label, Republic Records.

So far, fans have been able to get a behind-the-scenes look at the full 14-track collection, featuring songs like “Wranglers” and “Dammit Randy.” Today, July 24, Lambert is pulling out her boots and ramping up the anticipation even further with the release of another new banger titled “Alimony.”

A light-hearted look at the messiness of divorce

Her latest effort ramps up the energy and draws listeners to a honky-tonk dance floor with the sounds of rhythmic electric guitar riffs from Jedd Hughes and Ethan Ballinger, barrelhouse piano from Bukka Allen, Rachel Loy on bass and Conrad Choucroun on drums. The upbeat energy matches Lambert's empowerment from growing up as a true Texan, and offers humor amidst the story of a woman who wants to get what she deserves from the man who despised her.

“I called the lawyer in Dallas that lives in that palace / So I know he's good at winning when you think you're missing out,” Lambert sings in the pre-chorus before making her intentions crystal clear in the next lyric: “You start steppin' out/ Only one thing can comfort me/ If you're gonna leave me in San Antone/ Remember the alimony.”

How the song came about

Lambert recalled the moment she and co-writers Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally were inspired to write “Alimony.” She explained that they were in their barn, admiring their horses, when she asked McAnally if he had any songs they could turn into a song.

“He said he had one, and I said, 'What is it? Because your last one was 'Looking Back on Luckenbach,' and I didn't think you could top that. He said, 'Well, 'When you leave me in San Antone, think of the Alamo geeeee…'” Natalie and I said, 'All right, Shane! Stop showing off.'

“We went back into the house and got the guitars,” Lambert continues, “and I said very specifically, 'I want a shuffle, man.' I love shuffle so much, and this record needed a shuffle! I knew I wanted one in my set because I hadn't done one in a long time – and everyone loves shuffle.”

Miranda Lambert draws inspiration from her childhood

The “Actin' Up” singer had no trouble coming up with the lyrics for the track, as she is well-versed in all the ins and outs of a messy divorce. She laughed as she explained that when she was growing up, her parents were private investigators in Dallas, Texas, and were often assigned to divorce cases in areas considered a little more sophisticated.

“So that wasn't hard to write. I've heard about it my whole life,” she said, adding, “And once we had the line – If you leave me in San Antone, forget about alimony – it took off! We intentionally used every Texas metaphor we could think of; we wanted to take something pretty shitty and put some humor back into it. I mean, the guy gets out of it pretty easily if he just moves back in with his mom.”

The writers then assembled a “musical dream team” with Grammy-winning songwriter/producer Jon Randall to finish the song at Austin's legendary Arlyn Recording Studios. Their goal was to compose a song that would add extra momentum to Miranda Lambert's new project, and they accomplished just that and more.
