Mother says son was killed in custody dispute

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB/Gray News) – A mother said her 20-year-old son was killed in a custody dispute.

Investigators say three people are accused of plotting Steven Harris' murder while he was in a custody battle with the mother of his child.

“His death was prepared,” said his mother, LaSonia Harris.

LaSonia Harris said her son was picked up from home by an unknown car on July 17. That was the last time he was seen alive.

A few days later, a body believed to be Steven Harris was found in Wilkinson County, Mississippi, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

West Feliciana Parish deputies arrested Derek Hollins Jr., Calajia Jack and Allyah Martin.

LaSonia Harris said she felt multiple emotions.

“I am desperate because I lost my son. The circumstances under which I lost my son. I'm confused as to why this had to happen. “I’m hurt because I felt like this was a deliberate attempt to hurt me and my family, and I’m angry because it was unnecessary,” she said.

According to investigators, Steven Harris and Allyah Martin were in a custody battle over their son. LaSonia Harris believes this is the reason her son was murdered.

“It’s very clear he was framed,” she said.

The sheriff said Steven Harris was well known in the community and knew the two other people charged with his murder.

“We want to make sure we get justice for the victim and his family,” said Sheriff Brian Spillman.

Spillman said Hollins admitted the gun used in the murder was his.

LaSonia Harris wants to remember her son.

“My son was the typical 20-year-old college student. An HBCU music lover who played an instrument for 10 years. “My son was the most generous, talented and loyal friend you could ever meet,” she said.

LaSonia Harris said her grandson was with her and her husband.

The family is waiting for Steven Harris' body to be positively identified and an autopsy performed before bringing it back to Louisiana for burial.
