Oakland, California. – – An Oakland resident has been charged in a fatal shooting that left two brothers dead during a child fight.
According to the Alameda District Attorney's Office, 33-year-old Tommy Ramsey allegedly killed adult brothers Nathanuel Jamar Willis and Jason Markel Willis on December 20, 2024 in Oakland.
Ramsey was reportedly having an argument with the mother of his child during a custody hearing when he shot both Nathanuel and Jason.
“This is another tragic example of the irreversible and deadly consequences of someone using a weapon to settle an argument,” said Royl Roberts Royl Roberts, Chief Assistant District Attorney. “No family should endure the heartbreak of losing a loved one to gun violence in our community.”
The shooting happened on Fairmount Avenue north of Lake Merritt, Oakland police said.
What we don't know:
It was not immediately known what the circumstances were between Ramsey and the victims before the shooting.
It is also unclear the relationship between the brothers and the child's mother and Ramsey.
The child's current welfare was not shared by officials.
What we know:
Ramsey faces one count of murder for each of the brothers and special charges of weapons, personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great physical injury, and two strikes connected to the deaths of Jason Markel Wills and Nathanuel Jamar Willis, respectively.
His hearing is scheduled for Monday. On all charges, he is sentenced to up to 130 years and eight months in state prison.
