Malaika Arora married Arbaaz Khan when she was in her early 20s. After 19 years of marriage, the couple parted ways. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Malaika spoke about how she has outgrown the idea of ”settling down” later in life.
Talking about the reason for getting married at 25, Malaika told the publication, “Not that I grew up in an environment where I was told, 'Oh, you have to get married at this age.' I was told to live my life and go out. Enjoy, meet more people and have more relationships, that's all I was told. But I don't know what came to mind, I said when I was 22-23 that I wanted to get married, but it was like what I had to do now because it was the best option I had at that moment.
Malaika added that she was “questioned and ridiculed” when she realized marriage wasn't what she wanted.
“When I decided to divorce, I don't think there were too many women in the industry who got divorced and moved on. I felt like I had to feel good inside if I had done it in order to develop myself personally and make my decision to make my child happy and let him thrive in his environment. I did this.

Malaika said that many people despise divorce, but for her she needed to “feel settled and happy to make everyone around me happy. It starts with me.”
The actress even recalled a time when a publication wrote about the cost of one of her outfits and she received nasty comments. “Someone decided to publish a ridiculous article about something I was wearing and said how expensive it was, and they said, 'Obviously she can afford it because she's been paid a fat living,' and I was horrified. Whatever you have done in life, no matter at what level, it makes no difference,” said the actor.
