‘Seems like Kalyug has arrived’: Allahabad HC on elderly couple’s maintenance dispute | News from India

The case of an elderly couple aged between 75 and 80 years fighting a maintenance dispute prompted the Allahabad High Court to observe, “It seems that Kalyug has arrived.”
A bench of Justice Saurabh Shyam Shamshery last week heard a petition filed by one Munish Kumar Gupta (husband) challenging a family court order mandating him to pay Rs 5 lakh as maintenance to his wife (Gayatri), Live Law reported.
The court notified the wife and set a date for a final hearing, expressing hope that the parties could reach an agreement.
From the facts of the case, the plaintiff, Munish, was a Class IV employee in the medical department. In 1981, he built a house in the name of his wife. However, three years after his retirement, in 2008, Gayatri Devi gifted the house to her younger son, which triggered a dispute between the elder couple as the elder son was deprived of his rights under Live Law.
Due to the dispute, the couple was now living separately with their sons and the wife filed a claim for maintenance against the plaintiff in the family court. After the family court ordered the plaintiff to pay Rs 5,000 as maintenance to his wife, he approached the Supreme Court.
