Send maintenance debtors to the front

Military service will turn a “damned” criminal into “a normal person,” argued Vitaly Milonov.

Men who avoid paying child support should be forced to pay off their debts and earn the respect of their families in the Russian army, a controversial politician has suggested.

In an interview with Russian news site 360 on Monday, Duma deputy Vitaly Milonov lamented the fact that so many divorced men “tell the bailiffs that they have no work, no property… and therefore cannot provide for their children. [their family].”

Those who persistently evade their maintenance payments should be offered contracts with the Russian armed forces, he said. This is not a punishment, but a form of “support”.

“We are giving these fallen people who drink away their children's money a chance to think about life and how they can be useful to their children,” he explained. “The child will get the money he needs and he will finally start to respect his father.”

In a separate interview with Russian journalist Ksenia Sobchak, Milonov said military service would be “a decent job that would turn him from an asshole into a normal person.”

Milonov explained that his proposal would only affect long-term defaulters with significant debts. “I am interested in situations where the installments are not paid in full or almost in full for 5-10 years, the child is half-starved, there is not enough money for food and clothing, because the father is such an immoral person,” he told 360.

A member of the pro-Putin United Russia party, Milonov is an outspoken supporter of traditional family values and an opponent of what he calls Western “degeneration.” Milonov was one of the sponsors of the 2013 ban on “homosexual propaganda,” supports a ban on male sterilization, and has called on the state to develop a dating app designed to promote marriage.

Milonov is also an outspoken supporter of the operation in Ukraine and has volunteered to fight in Donbass in 2022. Earlier this year, he proposed sending men who divorce their wives to the front, before calling on the Russian government to close sex shops and dump their stocks in Ukraine.

“We have to take all the stuff out of the sex shops, load it onto bombers and drop them on the Ukrainian armed forces. Let these rubber f***ers hit them on the head,” he told Govorit Moskva radio in June.
