Setback for Mohammed Shami when court sentences him to pay monthly alimony to his estranged wife Hasin Jahan

From India Today Web Desk: Indian pace bowler Mohammed Shami has been ordered by a Kolkata court to pay his estranged wife Hasin Jahan a monthly alimony of 50,000 rupees. Jahan made multiple allegations against the right-arm pacemaker four years ago.

According to the court order, Jahan was not happy with the amount of alimony Shami was asked to pay as she demanded 10 lakh rupees a month from the Indian pacemaker. In 2018, Jahan filed a lawsuit demanding monthly maintenance of 10 lakh rupees, including 7 lakh rupees for personal expenses and 3 lakh rupees for the maintenance of her daughter.

Jahan is likely to appeal the verdict to a higher court and demand a bigger payment. The verdict was delivered by Alipore Court Judge Anindita Ganguly on Monday 23 January.

Timeline of Shami’s spit with Jahan

The whole dispute began when Hasin filed an official complaint with Jadavpur Police Station accusing Shami of adultery and domestic violence. Following the complaint, Shami was charged with domestic violence and attempted murder, but was released without bail.

Hasin Jahan claimed the cricketer and his family tortured them whenever they went to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh. “Yes, whenever I went to UP,” Jahan had told India Today when asked if Shami’s family had tortured her too. “You can ask the neighbors how they (Shami’s family) treated me. I’ve been silent because he’s been filing for divorce for two years. He tortured me, he tried everything to make me leave him,” added Jahan.

Jahan also claimed that Shami threatened her over the phone using different phone numbers.

However, Shami has consistently denied Jahan’s claims and even took to social media to say the allegations were false and said there was a conspiracy to defame him.

Shami had told India Today he was ready to apologize to Jahan if her allegations of infidelity and domestic violence were proven to be true.
