Colombian pop star Shakira and retired soccer player Gerard Piqué have been actively taking the final steps to resolve their separation. Recently, the estranged couple met face to face in a Barcelona court to formalize their custody agreement.
Shakira, Gerard Piqué formalize custody agreement
After lengthy custody talks in November, Shakira and Pique finally signed the amicable paperwork. The singer was the first to arrive at Family Court No. 18 in Barcelona, wearing dark sunglasses and a trench coat. She was with her brother and her legal team.
Pique then emerged alongside his attorneys wearing a denim shirt and baseball cap. The two entered and exited the court separately and were not pressured to make a statement to the press after the trial.
According to La Vanguardia, their agreement specifies that Pique gives Shakira full custody of their sons. Additionally, the document states that Shakira and her children, Sasha and Milan, will be relocating to Miami, Florida permanently.
For those who may not know, Shakira and Pique spent 11 years together. After the separation, it is ultimately a matter of agreeing on a favorable upbringing situation. Fortunately, both sides have the same view. In a joint statement after their agreement, the two made it clear that the protection of their children was their top priority.
“We appreciate the interest shown and hope the children can continue their lives with the privacy they need in a safe and tranquil environment,” the statement said.
Apparently the Barcelona document will not be the last court document they will sign. Shakira and Piqué still have to go to the US to sign another agreement.
She still faces a prison sentence for tax fraud allegations
Amid breakup issues, the Colombian singer is also facing charges of tax evasion by Spanish authorities. If found guilty, Shakira faces eight years and two months in prison and a fine of 23.7 million euros. This prompted the singer to fight for her rights and flatly denied all allegations against her.
“I paid everything they said I owed before they even filed a lawsuit,” she told Elle magazine. “To this day I owe them nothing.”
According to the singer, the singer is confident that she is doing “the right and transparent thing” because she is being advised by one of the four largest tax firms in the world, PricewaterhouseCoopers.
