KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Reuters) – Taiwanese singer Stella Chang will receive a staggering NT$1.6 billion (RM231 million) in alimony after a divorce from her ex-husband Sung Hsueh-jen, a banker.
According to Taiwanese media, the staggering amount includes a mansion, stocks and cash.
Chang, who has released more than 30 albums throughout her career, recently issued a statement explaining that she and her husband are separating due to irreconcilable differences.
News reports claim the singer divorced her husband, whom she married in 2005, because she became an outsider in the family and lost herself.
It was reported that Chang had to get her husband’s permission to do anything while Sung focused on the couple’s two sons and his financial career.
The two-time winner of the Golden Melody Award for Best Singer in Mandarin made the decision to file for divorce given that her sons mostly lived abroad coupled with their father’s preoccupation with his work.
The ex-couple announced they were ending their 15-year marriage on June 22 via a statement from their lawyers, shocking the Chinese entertainment world.
They urged the public not to speculate about the reason for their divorce so as not to hurt their children.
Chang, 53, and Sung, 67, said in the statement that they both couldn’t get over their differences and decided to divorce, which was finalized during their children’s summer vacation.
“We tried very hard but we couldn’t work it out and we filed for divorce last year.
“Although we will no longer be husband and wife in the future, we will still be the parents of our children.
“The children will not lose the love of either of us because of our divorce,” the statement said.
Chang had a glittering career in the 1990s after making her debut in 1985.
She and Sung moved to Hong Kong after their wedding and Chang retired from show business shortly after.
