The custody battle leads to a police shooting, a wild high-speed chase and an attempted murder charge
A California mother is facing two counts of attempted murder, assaulting a police officer with a deadly weapon and felony evasion after police told her she could not remove her 5-year-old child from his foster parents.
The responding officer is currently under investigation to determine whether his use of force was appropriate in the custody dispute that erupted into chaos.
Newly released footage from Oct. 1 shows Miesha Scott’s temper getting the better of her as Los Angeles Police Department officers verify that her son should stay with his foster father, her cousin.

Police were called to the parking lot of a Target store at Gaffey Street and Capitol Drive in San Pedro to help break up the argument between Scott and her relatives. The birth mother refused to return the young child to his guardian after a state-ordered visitation.
On police video, Scott can be seen with her hands raised, telling officers: “Don’t come right at me. ‘I’m in distress.’

As the officers try to calm her down, she continues to beg them not to come closer and to give her some space.
The 39-year-old seems excited. The more officers inquire about how they can support her, the more she becomes defensive and interruptive.
Finally, she shares: “It’s difficult for me to be a parent here with my cousin.” She adds that he “pressured” her to take her son back into his care and that she doesn’t want that.
Still unclear about what’s going on and why they were called, police take control of the back-and-forth, asking them for details about the boy in a vehicle they find parked in front of a white Chevrolet U-Haul truck.
“What is the custody situation for your son,” an officer asks.
She replies, “The custody situation with my son is such that my cousin would take care of my son and protect him at all costs until his mother gets out of prison and is able to…get custody herself.”
As the officer tries to figure out the details of the court-ordered custody agreement, including the fact that her cousin has become a foster parent due to her incarceration, Scott is uncooperative. Instead, she says the order is “complete.”
The officer asks, “Who made the decision,” to which she quickly replies, “Me.”
Eventually, officers were able to verify with the Department of Children and Family Services that the order was still in effect and that the boy should go with his older cousin.
With the son safely in the care of his guardian, the woman returns to her truck. She appears to drive the car as if she wanted to leave the parking lot, then turns the car around again and rams into the group. She crashes into the foster mother and narrowly avoids a collision with another officer.
An officer attempts to stop the vehicle by shooting at it, but Scott then accelerates and flees the parking lot. This leads to a high-speed chase that ultimately culminates in her crashing into a tree at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Paseo Del Mar.
Scott was then taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment for her injuries. After she was released from the doctor’s care, she was arrested.
The foster mother’s injuries were treated by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department and were deemed non-life-threatening. No other people were injured in this incident.
While Scott played a central role in the dramatic events, the officer who fired at her vehicle is currently being investigated by the LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division along with the Forensic Science Division.
Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be reviewed by the police chief, the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to assess whether the use of force was justified and consistent with department policy.
It is unclear whether Scott remains in custody.
