Police have identified the victim and suspect in a deadly shooting that took place Sunday night during a custody change in the parking lot of a Chesterfield County police branch.

Police said a duty officer was working in his squad car in the Appomattox Police Station parking lot at 2920 W. Hundred Road at 6:28 p.m. when he heard a gunshot. The officer immediately got out of his car and found a man with a gunshot wound. Police later identified the shooting victim as Stuart D. Jeffries, 33, of the 3500 block of Maryland Avenue in Richmond. Jeffries died at the scene.

Corey D. Goodson Sr., 44, of the 6100 block of Varina Point Lane in Richmond, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held in the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.

Police said the two men had been involved in an altercation following a custody swap. A woman and child who were with Jeffries were not injured.

“This shooting developed quickly and Officer Dean did not hesitate – at great personal risk – to demonstrate sufficient command and verbal de-escalation techniques to handle a chaotic situation without the use of physical force,” said Col. Jeffrey S Katz, Superintendent of Police . “Officer Dean’s bold and decisive actions prevented further violence, protected bystanders and eliminated any lingering threat to our community. While I am saddened by this tragic loss of life, I am very proud of him.”
