A Washington man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and first-degree criminal damage, according to law enforcement officials.
The charges against Patrick R. Sullivan, 40, stem from a custody battle that took place on January 21.
That day, Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Julie Ann Court, a residential area south of Washington along Highway A.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they learned that Sullivan had left the scene and taken a vehicle that did not belong to him. The deputies searched the area but could not locate Sullivan or the vehicle.
An hour later, neighbors reported to authorities that Sullivan had returned to the home and damaged the stolen vehicle by slashing the tires. It was later determined that Sullivan had broken off the key in the ignition in hopes of preventing the 911 caller from leaving the property.
When the deputies arrived, Sullivan and another person were arguing in the property’s parking lot.
MEPs were able to speak to the registered owner of the vehicle, who wished to report the theft and damage to his vehicle.
According to court records, Sullivan is on $50,000 bail at the Franklin County Adult Detention Center.
