Why the court rejected Asamoah Gyan's ex-wife's maintenance claim

Asamoah Gyan and ex-wife Gifty

Gifty Oware, ex-wife of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, initially demanded an amount of GH¢10 million as maintenance in the annulment proceedings.

Alimony is financial support that a person is required by law to provide to his or her spouse during separation or after a divorce; Maintenance.

Gifty Oware was out of luck because what she prayed for in court was not granted to her.

GhanaWeb sources indicate that Gifty reduced Oware from GH₵10 million to GH₵5 million before finally settling on GH₵1 million.

Her application for shares in Asamoah Gyan's shares in some companies was also rejected by the court.

The court ruled that the available evidence suggested that Gifty's marriage to Asamoah Gyan never existed as she was legally married to another man.

The court also found that Gifty did not make any significant contribution to the acquisition of the properties by Asamoah Gyan.

However, she was granted some of her reliefs including a four-bedroom house at Spintex in Accra, ownership of a petrol station plot in Prampram, BMW, Infiniti and Asamoah Gyan's British villa.

On October 31, 2023, a High Court in Accra handed down a verdict in a three-year divorce dispute involving former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan.

The court approved the dissolution of the marriage between Gyan and Gifty in 2013 and, in the course of the proceedings, issued subsequent determinations regarding the paternity of the couple's three children.

Gyan had previously denied paternity and forced the court to conduct a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test, the result of which proved that he was indeed the father of the children.

Dennis Law wrote in his report on the paternity issue: “Initially, Asamoah Gyan had denied the paternity of her three children and sought annulment of her marriage. However, the court noted in its decision dated October 31, 2023 that the three children are not both children and are in fact the descendants of Asamoah Gyan.

Other follow-up instructions regarding child support after the dissolution of the marriage included that “Asamoah Gyan is liable to pay Gifty Gyan a monthly amount of 25,000 Ghana Cedis.”

“This scholarship will be used for the education and welfare of the three children, excluding expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, airline tickets and various other costs related to child care,” the law firm added.
