Asamoah Gyan and ex-wife Gifty
Gifty Oware, the ex-wife of former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, initially demanded an amount of GH¢10 million as maintenance during the marriage annulment proceedings.
Alimony is financial support that a person is ordered by the court to pay to his or her spouse during separation or after a divorce.
Gifty Oware was out of luck because her request to the court was not granted.
GhanaWeb sources say Gifty Oware went from GH₵10 million to GH₵5 million before finally settling at GH₵1 million.
Her application for shares in Asamoah Gyan’s business was also rejected by the court.
The court ruled that the evidence available indicated that Gifty's marriage to Asamoah Gyan never existed because she was legally married to another man.
The court also found that Gifty did not materially contribute to Asamoah Gyan’s acquisition of the properties.
However, some of her facilities were granted to her, including a four-bedroom house at Spintex in Accra, ownership of a plot of land in Prampram earmarked for a petrol station, BMW, Infiniti and Asamoah Gyan's villa in the UK.
On October 31, 2023, a High Court in Accra delivered its verdict in a three-year divorce dispute involving former Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan.
The court approved the dissolution of the marriage between Gyan and Gifty in 2013 and also made decisions regarding the paternity of the couple's three children.
Gyan had previously denied paternity, which forced the court to conduct a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test, the result of which proved that he was indeed the father of the children.
Dennis Law wrote in his report on the paternity issue: “Initially, Asamoah Gyan had denied paternity of her three children and applied for an annulment of her marriage. However, the court found in its decision dated October 31, 2023 that the three children are indeed descendants of Asamoah Gyan.”
Further resulting instructions regarding child maintenance after the divorce read: “Asamoah Gyan is obliged to pay Gifty Gyan a monthly amount of 25,000 Ghana Cedi.”
“This scholarship is intended for the education and well-being of the three children. Excludes expenses such as school fees, medical and dental care, air tickets and various other costs related to child care,” the law firm added.
