March 23 – The custody hearing regarding the two children of Zheng Shuang and his ex-partner Zhang Heng recently began on March 22 in Denver, Colorado.
According to Sohu, Zheng attended the trial, which was broadcast live on the Internet. She is currently in Denver for six months to resolve the custody issue. Zheng said she has not accepted any new acting jobs and will not make a decision about returning to China until arrangements for the children are finalized.
During the trial, Zheng admitted that she has two children with Zhang Heng – Lucas, born in December 2019, and Luna, born in January 2020 – both through surrogacy. The decision to use surrogacy, Zheng said, was due to her health condition and not – as reported by tabloids – professional considerations.
Zheng revealed that her relationship with Zhang ended in September 2019, three months before the birth of her first child, after she found out that he had cheated on her. She admitted that she had considered calling off the surrogacy but had not made a decision about it.
She also revealed that she decided to go to the US after the revelation about the children in February and only met Lucas and Luna the next month. Zheng said that she was very happy and could feel that the children were slowly accepting her.

The actress then emphasized that she had also hired a professional parenting consultant to help her because she was an inexperienced mother.
However, Zhang denied this and claimed that the actress was impatient with children. He added that the only reason Zheng agreed to have children with him was because he was more patient with them.
Zhang also claimed that Zheng was mentally unstable and reportedly told him about her mental health issues throughout the relationship, including her alleged depression and suicidal tendencies.
In one case, Zhang said, he had to return from the UK after receiving a call from Zheng's parents asking him to take care of Zheng. He also mentioned that he once asked the actress to see a doctor, but Zheng was against it due to her celebrity status.
Zhang admitted that he was worried that giving custody to Zheng Shuang would endanger their two children. He explained: “I cannot put my children in the hands of people who abuse animals, because Zheng Shuang did that to dogs.”
After the first hearing, the judge ordered Zheng Shuang to undergo a psychiatric examination.
Netizens who learned about the trial expressed mixed feelings about the whole affair, with some accusing Zhang of using Zheng's mental health issues as a weapon to take her children away, especially since he himself had started the whole affair by revealing the identity of Lucas and Luna's mother.
The discussion about Zheng Shuang's surrogacy came to light in January when Zhang posted a photo of himself with two children and said he could not return to mainland China due to the pandemic and the fact that he had two children to care for. It was then revealed that the two children were his children with Zheng Shuang, whom they conceived through surrogacy.
The scandal had damaged Zheng's reputation and brands and productions decided to end their collaboration with the actress.
