SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – An arrest has now been made after a custody swap turned into a violent incident on Christmas Day.
The Shreveport Police Department says officers at the intersection of Bert Koun’s Industrial Loop and Walker Road responded to reports of gunfire just before 11:30 a.m. on December 25. When they got there, they learned that Leighton Mash, 29, and his girlfriend were holding a custody swap between their children and the children’s father when a verbal argument broke out between the two men.
Mash reportedly got out of the car and shot the victim’s car, which was containing his two young children. The victim returned fire. According to police, no one was hit.
Mash then ran away and was found a few blocks away by officers. More charges could be forthcoming, officials say.
Police encourage anyone who needs a “safe exchange location” to use the front of the patrol desk office at the Shreveport Police Complex. This location can be used for a custody exchange or when buying items from a stranger. A sergeant is always available to assist and the area is under 24-hour video surveillance.
