Man would rather go to jail than pay alimony

MATTOON — A full house welcomed the mood for the high school senior’s comedy “Am I Intruding?” Thursday night at the Mattoon Theater. Everyone in the cast, which consisted of twelve seniors, played the same lead role as the rest of the cast. The play is widely regarded as one of the best ever performed by a higher class. Before the curtain for Act 1, George Craig, Senior President, presented the baton to Fred Runge, Junior President. The play’s plot revolved around the efforts of Horace Vare, a wealthy businessman played by Richard Larimer, to avoid being forced out of Bluebird Motors Corporation, of which he is a shareholder. Richard Larimer played the role of father and troubled businessman in good style, looking like… CHARLESTON – During the Charleston Municipal Court’s tenure in June 1922, Eugene Riley was sentenced to pay $15 in alimony in support of his wife and two minor children after the court granted the wife, Mrs. Lulu May Riley, a divorce decree. Riley failed to make the monthly payments and was ordered on March 4 to appear in court and explain why he failed to comply with the court’s orders. Some sort of arrangement had been made to allow young Riley his freedom and enough time to pay the monthly premiums along with the arrears. On Thursday morning, Riley introduced herself to Sheriff McNutt. He informed the officer that he could not pay the agreed amounts and wanted to go to jail. He was charged with contempt of court and taken to the county jail.

CHARLESTON – District Treasurer Glenn Stilgebauer still has $468,456 owed to taxpayers. A recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling allows individual taxpayers to collect this amount as a personal property tax from the county in 1971. The court decision, made earlier this spring, upheld a provision in the state constitution that would eliminate personal property taxes for individuals. The Illinois Supreme Court approved an order on May 4 that gave counties the green light to refund the 1971 property tax. Stilgebauer claims that he is awaiting a direct supplementary order from the Illinois Supreme Court before refunding the taxes. When asked if the county had the money to pay back the taxes, Stilgebauer replied, “Oh yes. It’s not about not wanting to give the money back,” he said. “It’s about not knowing how much interest you have to pay.”

ASHMORE — An Ashmore woman who organized a youth baseball program is one of eight people from across the country to receive a $500 scholarship from an organization that promotes community development. Tami Ogden, 23, a former Ashmore baseball player, revived the program this year with the help of her husband Rob and Tim and Tina Hockenberry. Ogden, who is also Ashmore’s village clerk, applied for the grant through Do Something, a nationwide charitable program run by youth to inspire other young people to improve their communities. Ogden’s program, called “A Team,” is designed to give Ashmore children a chance to play baseball and work on community projects in their hometown. The team, made up of approximately 15 players ranging in age from 9 to 12, plays at the new baseball diamond at Ashmore Village Park. The schedule includes games with Kansas, Martinsville, Brocton and Newman.
