Woman dies after shooting in Cumberland County custody battle

A Fayetteville woman who was shot dead last week amid a “custody matter” has died, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Barbara Mitchell Adair, 59, was shot dead on July 12 in Block 500 of Mammoth Drive, a news release said. She died from her injuries on Saturday, officials said.

According to the sheriff’s office, around 2:45 pm on July 12, officers were on their way to the Rosehill Road crime scene to report a custody matter when they were told that shots had been fired.

No further details were released and it doesn’t appear anyone was arrested in the shooting.
