Malaika Arora met and fell in love with Arbaaz Khan when she was in her early 20s. The two married shortly afterwards, but after 19 years of marriage the couple parted ways. In a recent interview, Malaika spoke about the idea of settling down and how she grew out of that idea later in life.
In an interview with a popular entertainment agency, Malaika shared the reason behind her getting married at 25 despite not facing any pressure from her family. “Not that I grew up in an environment where I was told, 'Oh, you have to get married at this age.' I was told to live my life, go out, have fun, meet more people and have more relationships. I was told all this. Still, I don't know what came to mind. I said, 'At 22-23, I want to get married.' Nobody forced me to do it, but it was what I had to do now because it was the best option I had at that moment,” said Malaika.
Malaika admitted that years after her marriage, she realized that this was not what she wanted, but was “questioned and ridiculed” over her decision to part ways with Arbaaz. “When I decided to get divorced, I don't think there were too many women in the industry who got divorced and moved on. I felt that if I wanted to make my child happy and thrive in his environment, I needed to feel okay about my personal development and choices. So that’s what I did,” she said.
Malaika said that everyone looked down on divorce but for her, she needs to “feel settled and happy to make everyone around me happy.” “It starts with me.”
The 50-year-old actress is also a favorite of the paparazzi and she spoke about an incident where a publication discussed the cost of her outfit and got very nasty in their comments. “Someone decided to publish a ridiculous article about something I was wearing and said how expensive it was and they said, 'She can obviously afford it because she was paid a lot,' and I was horrified. Whatever you have done in life, at whatever level, it makes no difference,” she said.
