Murkowski’s spiritual and political fling

While US Senator Lisa Murkowski claims to be both a Catholic and a Republican, her statements and public actions objectively undermine those claims.

The Catholic Church has consistently taught that marriage – the foundation of human society – is the lifelong union of a man and a woman and that unborn babies are created in the image of God – and fundamentally our undying protection, love and care deserve moment of conception.

Murkowski’s voting record betrays these truths. She is a vocal advocate of same-sex marriage and a staunch ally of those who believe unborn children can be killed in the womb if deemed undesirable or uncomfortable.

For decades, local bishops and priests have failed to publicly hold Murkowski to account.

Similarly, Murkowski continues to brandish her Republican credibility even though she opposes the main party platform, which also officially recognizes marriage as the union of one man and one woman and states that unborn life must be protected from those who carry babies through would destroy abortion.

These are not fringe issues, but the foundations on which society and all human rights rest.

Thankfully, Alaska’s Republican Party has chided Murkowski for abandoning the party platform. She is no longer endorsed or endorsed by the GOP in her home state.

Unfortunately, the leadership of the Catholic Church has failed to take similar action. For decades, local bishops and priests have failed to publicly hold Murkowski to account. Whether out of cowardice or a desire to gain access to the halls of power, local clergy have remained largely silent while Murkowski shamelessly flaunts the church’s most critical moral and ethical teachings while claiming to be a Catholic.

This week, a lone deacon from Anchorage bravely chose to break that silence. Although he faces setbacks from his superiors, we hope his words will inspire the spiritual leaders of the local church to reclaim their roles as defenders of the truth and shepherds of souls.
