Back in 2016, Amber Heard stated that she plans to donate her entire $7 million divorce settlement to charity, with half going to the ACLU and half going to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
American Civil Liberties Union chief operations officer Terence Dougherty alleges that Amber Heard has yet to pay her previously agreed $3.5 million donation from her divorce settlement (ACLU).
Dougherty said in an affidavit aired in court Thursday that Heard, 36, agreed in a statement to attorney that half of her $7 million divorce settlement would go to the ACLU and the rest to Children’s Hospital Los to donate to Angeles.

As of December 2021, when the statement was taken, only $1.3 million had been donated to the ACLU (a non-profit organization dedicated to upholding the rights and freedoms of individuals) on her behalf.
When Heard’s payments stopped in 2018, the ACLU contacted her about possible installment payments in 2019, according to Dougherty, who added, “We learned that she was experiencing financial difficulties.”
ACLU attorneys helped develop and analyze Heard’s comment on surviving domestic violence in The Washington Post in December 2018, which Dougherty says is central to the court dispute. Depp, 58, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard, though she didn’t specifically mention him in the piece.
The couple met while filming The Rum Diary in 2011 and married in February of that year. Heard filed a domestic violence restraining order against him in May 2016, alleging that he abused her. Depp denied the allegations and the divorce was finalized in August 2016. (It was completed in January 2017).

When they agreed to divorce, Depp and Heard released a joint statement at the time, saying, “Our relationship has been very passionate and volatile at times, but always bound by love. Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never any intent to cause physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes Johnny the best for the future. Amber will donate the financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity.”
“The amount received in the divorce was $7 million, and $7 million will be donated,” Heard said in a statement shortly thereafter.

“As described in the restraining order and divorce settlement, money has never played a role for me personally, and never did, except to the extent that I could donate it to charity and thereby hopefully help the less able-bodied,” she said at the time adding that the amount she pledged “exceeded any monies I have given away in the past and will give away in the future.”
She also said her donation would be split between several charities with “a particular focus on ending violence against women” and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which honored her with a seven-figure donation in 2018.
A judge last year gave Johnny Depp permission to force the ACLU to disclose whether or not Heard had donated the sum she promised, and the organization had to release papers to prove it.
According to Elaine Bredehoft, Heard’s legal representative, during a hearing in July, the actress still planned to donate, although the timing was “undetermined.” Bredehoft said at the time: “[Heard] has always said she has full intentions to continue giving the full $7 million, but she can’t do it just yet. She will if she can. But she gave a considerable amount.”
Amber Heard claims her ‘Aquaman 2’ role has been significantly cut following allegations from Johnny Depp
When British tabloid The Sun accused Depp of being a “wife beater” in November 2020, he successfully sued the newspaper for defamation. Heard testified that the outlet’s claims were “essentially true,” and the court agreed. Depp’s attempt to reverse the decision was denied in March 2021.
Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has said he wants to defend his name in the trial, which will be televised live via various media outlets. Heard, who welcomed her first child, a daughter, in April 2021, released a statement ahead of the trial, saying, “I hope that after this case closes, Johnny and I can move on. I have always loved Johnny and it pains me greatly to have to act out the details of our past lives together in front of the world.”
On the first day of testimony, Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, stated that evidence will show she was physically, emotionally, verbally and psychologically abused in a variety of ways by Depp and that she was subjected to “sexual violence by Depp.” A spokesperson for Depp denied the claims, calling them “fictitious.” Stay up to date with us, only at leedaily.com
