Ms. Roh So-young, the divorced wife of SK Business Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, is said to have doubled her claims for alimony and division of Chey's assets to over 2 trillion won (US$1.5 billion) in the ongoing divorce proceedings, Korean news agency Yonhap reported on January 10, 2024, citing Korean judicial officials.

Chey's SK Group, which had been far down the rankings, saw its stock soar during the rule of former President Roh Tae-woo, the father of Chei's estranged wife Roh So-young.

Chey, who now heads South Korea's second-largest conglomerate, and Roh, the daughter of the late former President Roh Tae-woo, married in 1988. But between 2017 and 2019 they filed for divorce after Chey admitted to having an illegitimate child.

Chey's SK Group companies reportedly grew by leaps and bounds while his wife's father, Roh Tae-woo, served as President of the Republic of Korea.

In December 2022, the Seoul Family Court approved the divorce and ordered the SK chairman to pay 66.5 billion won (US$51.21 million) in asset division and 100 million won in alimony. Roh then demanded 300 million won in alimony and half of Chey's stake in the group's holding company, valued at about 1 trillion won.

The ruling has since been appealed to the Seoul Supreme Court, and Roh has changed her compensation demand to three billion won in alimony and about two trillion won in cash, according to judicial officials.

Roh's lawyers, contacted by phone by Yonhap News Agency, declined to comment on specific details of the divorce proceedings. The appeal hearing in their divorce is scheduled to begin Thursday at the Seoul Supreme Court.
